This sculpture portrays a weathered cowboy, who after years of trapping fur and guiding wagon trains, now watches over the cattle of a local rancher. The artist has captured this weathered soul in authentic style as the man is outfitted with tapaderos on his stirrups and a quirt, or riding whip in hand. The gun he carries is a large caliber black-powder and ball weapon. Thus, you won’t find any loops on his belt because he carries his powder in a brass bottle or small flattened cow-horn fitted with a brass spout.

After the first carving, a team of master mold makers craft first-generation models using the traditional “lost-wax” casting method. A variety of metals may be used in each sculpture, including hand-tooled finishing elements like Lucite, wood, brass, fine pewter, copper, and 24k gold vermeil. The vibrant colors in each sculpture are a result of a patina technique using heat, various chemicals, and acid to permanently oxidize the colors to the metal sculpture.
